A National Symposium Soil Plant Water Interaction for Orchards Management under Changing Climate and Agri-Tech Exhibition

The national symposium addressed the key issues concerning Soil Plant Water Interaction for Orchards Management under Changing Climate. In total 120 papers were presented from different Universities and research centres of Pakistan which includes, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University, The Agriculture University Peshawar, University of Agriculture Multan, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, GC University Lahore, University of Poonch Rawalakot, Hazara University, Ghazi University, The University of Haripur, University of Swat, Government College University Faisalabad, Soil and Water Conservation Research Institute (SAWCRI), Agriculture Research Institute, Soil and Water Testing Laboratory Jhelum, Balouchistan Agriculture Research Institute and Pakistan Agriculture Research Council.
The symposium was organized in different sessions which include Plant water and nutrient requirements, role of water and nutrients in physiology of fruits, Nutrients and water impact on horticultural crop quality, storability, and transportability, Measurements and monitoring of plant, soil, water and nutrient status , Plant microbe interaction, Saline agriculture (plant salt tolerance), Precision horticultural water and fertilizer management and fertilizer recommendation systems, Water and nutrient management as affected by climate change and Drought stress management in fruits.

Recommendations of the Symposium
Climate change is reality and it is posing and now it is going unpredictable
Temperature: Summer duration is extending compared to winter which is squeezing

  • Integrated efforts are needed from all disciplines such as meteorologist, agronomist, horticulturist, soil scientists, plant breeders and water engineers to device mitigation strategies in the fate of climate change. 
  • There is dire need to focus on research regarding climate smart agriculture practices particularly to reduce productivity losses in orchards. These include integrated nutrient management, efficient irrigation practices such as drip irrigation, use of bioregulators etc.
  • The policy makers should focus on providing funds on research regarding climate changes, construction of water strategies for new reservoirs and enhancing the capacity of the existing reservoirs.
  • The breeders should develop climate resilient fruit varieties to minimize the damage cause by climate change.
  • We should also focus on the minor fruits too; as minor fruits can be resource of earnings.
